A well-designed office kitchen can be much more than a place to make a cup of tea. Modern workplaces increasingly use kitchen and breakout areas as informal spaces where employees can relax, catch up with colleagues and hold quick meetings away from their desks. One way to make better use of this space is to introduce a barista-style design. By combining practical kitchen facilities with comfortable seating, stylish furniture and a dedicated drinks area, you can create an inviting environment that feels more like a coffee shop than a traditional office kitchen.

A barista-style office kitchen can provide employees with a change of scenery while giving visitors and customers a more welcoming place to meet.

What Is a Barista-Style Office Kitchen?

A barista-style office kitchen combines the practical facilities of a workplace kitchen with the atmosphere of a coffee shop or café. Rather than simply providing a kettle, microwave and basic worktop, the space becomes a more flexible area for making drinks, socialising and holding informal meetings. You might include a dedicated coffee station, hot and cold drinks, snacks, standing-height tables, bar stools or comfortable breakout seating. The layout will depend on the size of your workplace and how you expect employees to use the space.

A well-planned office kitchen design can also encourage employees to step away from their desks and interact with colleagues throughout the working day.

The Key Ingredients for a Successful Office Kitchen

Comfort

An effective office kitchen needs to accommodate more than people preparing food and drinks. If you want employees to use the area for informal meetings or socialising, consider how you can introduce comfortable and practical seating. You do not necessarily need large sofas. Poseur tables can provide a useful surface for drinks, laptops and paperwork while taking up relatively little floor space. Bar stools can also work well around higher tables or counters. They give employees somewhere to sit while enjoying a coffee or having a quick conversation without making the area feel like a formal meeting room.

Practicality

Office kitchens can become busy throughout the day, so good organisation matters. Think carefully about where you position your coffee machine, kettle, fridge, storage, bins and preparation areas. Keeping frequently used facilities accessible can help people move around the space more easily and prevent unnecessary congestion. You should also consider noise. Coffee machines, conversations and general activity can create additional noise, particularly in open-plan offices. If your office kitchen sits close to workstations or meeting areas, a room partition system can help create some separation while keeping the space open.

Style

Your office kitchen can contribute significantly to the overall appearance of your workplace. Choose furniture, finishes and accessories that complement your existing office design while adding some personality to the space. Practical features do not need to look purely functional. For example, a stylish splashback can create a focal point behind a drinks station while making the surrounding area easier to clean. Adding plants in attractive planters can also introduce colour and soften the appearance of a workplace kitchen. You do not need to copy the design of a high-street coffee shop. Instead, take inspiration from coffee shop design and adapt it to suit your business and employees.

Function

Before making changes to your office kitchen, think about exactly how you want people to use it. Will you provide tea and coffee? What about coffee syrups, snacks and cold drinks? Will employees serve themselves or will someone manage the drinks area? You should also decide who will take responsibility for cleaning and replenishing the space. A self-service kitchen still needs regular attention. Assigning responsibility for checking supplies and keeping the area clean can help maintain a pleasant and hygienic environment throughout the working day.

Make Your Office Kitchen More Versatile

You do not need a large refurbishment to create a more flexible office kitchen. Small changes to the layout, furniture and accessories can make an existing kitchen more useful. Adding a standing-height table, improving storage or introducing suitable seating can turn a basic kitchen into a space that supports informal meetings and collaboration. You can also consider practical additions such as office power solutions, cable management products and desk accessories if employees regularly use laptops, tablets or mobile devices in the area. This allows your office kitchen to perform several functions without requiring a completely separate breakout room.

Create a More Welcoming Workplace

A modern office kitchen can play an important role in the wider workplace. It provides somewhere for employees to take a break, prepare refreshments and interact with colleagues while also offering an alternative environment for informal meetings. By combining practical kitchen facilities with breakout furniture, poseur tables, bar seating, storage and workplace accessories, you can create a space that works harder for your business.
