How to Choose the Right Height Adjustable Desk for Your Workspace

Finding the Perfect Height for Your Office Desk and Table

The right desk height can make a significant difference to the comfort and usability of an office workstation. A desk that sits too high or too low can make it difficult to maintain a comfortable posture, particularly when employees spend much of the working day at their desks. However, ergonomic desk height is not a one-size-fits-all measurement. Everyone has a different height, build and working position, which means a desk that feels comfortable for one person may not work as well for another.

The good news is that you do not always need to replace an existing desk to improve its height. Desk height adjusters and table height adjusters provide a simple and cost-effective way to adapt fixed-height office furniture.

What Makes an Ergonomic Workstation?

Desk height is an important part of workstation ergonomics, but it works alongside several other factors. A well-positioned workstation should allow you to sit comfortably with your feet supported, your shoulders relaxed, and your arms positioned naturally when using the keyboard and mouse. Your monitor should also sit at a suitable height and distance. If the screen sits too low, you may find yourself repeatedly looking down or tilting your head. A monitor stand or monitor riser can help you position the screen more appropriately without changing the height of the entire desk.

You should also be able to reach frequently used equipment and documents without repeatedly stretching or twisting. When you bring these elements together, you can create a more comfortable and practical ergonomic office workstation.

What Is the Standard Desk Height?

Many traditional office desks sit at around 72–75 cm high, although the exact height varies between desks and manufacturers. This works reasonably well for many people, but it cannot accommodate every employee. Taller or shorter users may find a standard fixed-height desk less comfortable, particularly when they cannot adjust the position of the chair or other workstation equipment enough to compensate. Rather than assuming there is one perfect desk height, it is better to adjust the workstation around the individual user.

If the Desk Is Too High

A desk that is too high can cause the user to raise their shoulders or position their arms awkwardly when typing and using a mouse. If the desk cannot be lowered, adjusting the chair height can sometimes help. However, raising the chair can leave the user’s feet unsupported. A suitable footrest or foot support can provide additional support and help create a more comfortable sitting position.

If the Desk Is Too Low

A desk that is too low can encourage the user to lean forward or adopt an awkward working position. This can become particularly noticeable for taller employees, who may struggle to find enough space underneath the desk while maintaining a comfortable posture. In this situation, desk leg height adjusters can provide a straightforward solution.

How Desk Height Adjusters Can Help

Replacing an entire desk simply because it is the wrong height can be unnecessary and expensive. Desk height adjusters can raise the height of existing desks and tables, allowing businesses to adapt furniture to different users. Depending on the product, table and desk leg adjusters can provide several centimetres of additional height. This makes them useful for office desks, workstations, tables and other furniture with suitable leg profiles.

They can also prove useful when standard office furniture needs to accommodate taller employees or when a workstation needs a small height adjustment without replacing the furniture. Before choosing an adjuster, check the dimensions and profile of your desk or table legs, as well as the amount of height adjustment you require.

How High Should an Office Desk Be?

There is no single desk height that suits everyone. Instead, use the position of the user to determine whether the workstation feels comfortable. When seated at the desk, aim for a position where:

  • Your feet can rest securely on the floor or a suitable footrest.
  • Your knees have sufficient clearance underneath the desk.
  • Your shoulders can remain relaxed rather than raised.
  • Your elbows can sit comfortably close to your body when using the keyboard and mouse.
  • Your wrists can remain in a comfortable, neutral position.
  • Your monitor can sit at a suitable viewing height without requiring you to constantly bend or tilt your neck.
  • Frequently used items remain within easy reach.

These principles provide a much more useful starting point than simply selecting a desk based on a standard measurement.

Don’t Forget the Chair and Monitor

An ergonomic workstation depends on several pieces of equipment working together. Your office chair, desk, monitor and accessories should all work together to create a comfortable working position. Adjusting one element may mean that you need to adjust another. For example, if you raise a desk to accommodate a taller user, check that the chair still provides a comfortable sitting position and that the user’s feet remain supported. Likewise, changing the position of the monitor can make a significant difference to how comfortable the workstation feels. A monitor arm or riser can provide additional flexibility without taking up unnecessary desk space.

Fixed-Height vs Adjustable Desks

Height-adjustable desks and sit-stand desks provide the greatest flexibility because users can change the desk height to suit their individual requirements. However, not every workplace needs to replace its existing furniture. For businesses working with a large amount of fixed-height office furniture, relatively small adjustments can make existing desks more adaptable. Desk leg adjusters, footrests and monitor accessories can all help businesses improve workstation ergonomics without the cost of replacing complete desks. This can be particularly useful when upgrading an existing office, fitting out multiple workstations or accommodating employees of different heights.

Get the Right Desk Height for Your Workplace

The ideal desk height depends on the individual, the furniture and the way the workstation is used. Rather than looking for one universal measurement, focus on creating a setup that allows each user to work comfortably and maintain a natural position. For businesses, simple additions such as desk height adjusters, table leg adjusters, monitor arms and footrests can make existing office furniture more flexible and help create better workstation setups.
