Set up a hybrid-working home office for under £500

So, you’ve landed that new job and now you’re hybrid working for the long run. But working from home isn’t always easy. There are plenty of distractions and to be effective in your new role, you need an efficient and well-equipped home office.

Sound expensive? It doesn’t have to be. In this article, we’ll show you how to put together a safe, comfortable and convenient home office, perfect for remote working or hybrid working and all for under £500.

Your hybrid-working home office shopping list:

Desk

Price: £135 (excl VAT) or an electric sit stand desk frame for £214.50 (excl VAT)

Things to consider:

What space do you have? How will you use your desk? And finally, do you want a sit/stand desk? Sit/stand desks are believed to be much better for posture and back health, so if you’re likely to be clocking up some serious hours behind your desk, a sit/stand desk could be the way to go.

However, keep in mind that your desk is likely to be the statement piece of the room, so choose well. Consider the style of home office you are aiming to achieve and find a desk the right colour and design to meet this.

Office chair

Price: £105 upwards (excl VAT)

An ergonomic desk chair is a highly adjustable desk chair that enables you to find the right postural fit for a good, seated position. A good ergonomic or posture chair is worth its weight in gold so, if you have budget, blow it on your working from home desk chair.

Ergonomic chairs typically enable you to adjust the back, the seat height, the armrests, and there may be a lumbar support and may even be an adjustable headrest. An ergonomic chair starts at around £270 but, if you don’t need all this versatility, a simple operator chair would be less expensive and will still give you much of the support you need.

Storage

Price: From £41.23 (excl VAT)

You’ll need somewhere to store pens, paper and maybe even folders while you’re working at home.

While you could use your favourite mug to store pens and pencils, there’s something about having a clear desk at the end of the day that makes home-working so much more manageable, and these under-desk storage drawers offer a solution to achieving a tranquil office environment.

Backdrop

Find yourself an eye-catching backdrop. A conversation point can be really useful. Favourites include bookshelves, artwork, a canvas print, or even a sofa and pot plant. A focal point can make all the difference by providing an attractive backdrop.

Monitor riser

Price: £110.70 (excl VAT)

Experts recommend that your monitor sit at eye level, so invest in a monitor riser for optimal posture. Depending on the type of work you do, single monitor arms or double monitor arms can help to keep your desk clutter-free, give your camera a better perspective for online meetings and video calls, and help you to keep a good posture.

Noticeboard or dry wipe whiteboard

Price: £26.28 (excl VAT)

A notice board or whiteboard will give you somewhere neat and tidy to keep all your post-its, memos and mapping. You can choose whether to invest in a magnetic dry wipe board or simply a dry-wipe board you can write on.
