The food service industry is growing – perfect timing for a fit-out

The restaurant industry is once more showing signs of growth. As of at the end of 2022, the food service industry was responsible for the employment of over 15 million people. In the past 2 years, the industry has been responsible for increasing its workforce by 2.8 million jobs, however, it’s still just under half a million off its pre-pandemic levels.

The pundits say that signs are good for a full recovery. Despite an initially anticipated industry decline of 33%, Statista is saying that the industry is expected to make a full recovery by the end of next year.

In light of this positive outlook, many restauranteurs are planning to update their restaurants, or even to carry out a complete fit-out to maximise their share of the food service pie as the market continues to kick up.

Essential tips for a restaurant fit-out

  • Keep the design easy to clean. Choose furniture that is easy to clean, but also that makes it as easy as possible to clean the floors, walls and units around.
  • Make the space comfortable, not clinical. Consider the ambience you want to create in your restaurant. Would you like a theme such as an outdoors feel, maybe an art gallery-type feel, or a living room atmosphere. Then choose décor to work with this. Pinterest can be a great source of inspiration.
  • Have a budget and keep the budget in mind.
  • Consider your USP – your unique selling point. Why will your customers come to you rather than the café or restaurant two doors down? If you don’t have one, will this be done through your food, your prices, your service, or your environment?
