How to choose a pop up socket for your desk or worktop

Remote and hybrid working has led to an increase in mobile devices – all of which need to be charged. This is leading to an increase in demand for accessible sockets in offices. A great way to meet this demand is by installing pop up or pull up sockets within a desk or countertop.

In this blog, we’ll look at everything you need to consider before buying a pop up socket for your office or desk space.

What is a pop up socket?

A pop up socket is an electrical outlet that sits below the surface of your worktop or countertop, hidden from sight by a cap that sits flush with the desktop. With just the push of a button or a slight twist, the unit pops up, revealing sockets ready for use.

As well as helping to eliminate spaghetti cables, the use of a pop up socket increases the amount of usable wall space without stealing desk space, as when the sockets aren’t in use, they can be hidden away below the desk.

Why use a pop up socket?

Because the sockets are set beneath a countertop, you can choose the positioning. This means the sockets can pop up at the right place to plug in the printer, computer or mobile phone charger, eliminating the need for cables to be trailed across the floor, causing a trip hazard and looking unsightly.

How much does a pop up socket cost?

You can get Pop up sockets to suit any budget and any style. For an ultra-sleek finish, you could choose a state-of-the-art motorised pop up socket that includes USB chargers and a wireless charging unit. Of course, the more intricate the design, the higher the cost, but there are budget-friendly pop up sockets available, for example, our entry-level 60mm pop up socket which contains 3 3-pin sockets and 2 USB chargers starts at just a little over £37.

Things to consider before you install a pop up worktop socket or countertop socket

Pop up or pull up?

With pull up sockets, you’ll have to take hold of a handle or grip and manually raise the unit. This tends to be a feature of entry-level models.

Pop up sockets lift up ready for use when the user pushes a button or the centre of the console. Often, they will only pop up part way, to be pulled up to the full height by hand. If that isn’t the stylish finish you’re looking for, consider a motorised pop up socket  which requires no manual involvement.

Finish

Units are available in matt chrome, bright chrome or black, so whether you want one that blends in, or that stands out, one with a black button, a white button, or even no button at all, you can find the right finish to get your desired effect on our website.

Of course if you want desk-mounted power sockets, you could alternatively choose one of our motorised revolving power modules that open and close to reveal sockets at the touch of a button or our in-surface power modules like the V-Dot.
