Recessed castors- what they are and when to use them

Recessed castors are both discrete and practical. They can barely be seen unless actively sought out, but can be relied upon to make shifting furniture like beds, sofas and bedside tables easier.

What is a recessed castor?

A recessed castor is a moulded cavity that is flush-fitted into the furniture. Inside the cavity sits a ball bearing that can swivel around 360 degrees. This makes it easy to move furniture in any direction and avoids the swivel limitations and frustrations that can be experienced with standard castors.

Why use a recessed castor?

By recessing castors, you can cash in on all the benefits of using castors for mobility without having to compromise on the positioning of an item because of its height. This means you can conveniently position furniture such as a standard double-height filing unit beneath a standard-height desk.

The recessed castors can also be used to reduce the distance from the floor to the bottom of the piece of furniture or equipment by between 11.5mm and 13.5mm. In some cases, those 2cm can make all the difference. Althouhg, it’s worth noting that they work best on hard floor areas or very low pile carpets.

When to use recessed castors

Recessed castors are perfect for use in pedestal units such as filing cabinets and bedside tables, they also work well in under-bed storage or pull-out shelves – in fact, anything that you need to move regularly where height is a consideration.

In the case of a mobile pedestal unit with draws where the centre of gravity shifts when in use, a fifth castor can be added to help support the load and prevent overbalancing.

How to fit a recessed castor

Recessed castors are simple to fit and even easier to use.

  • Make a hole the same diameter as the castor in the base of your furniture ideally using a hole saw.
  • Position the recessed castor over the hole and simply press it into the hole you made.

That’s literally it. It couldn’t be much easier.
