If you’re planning a new kitchen or upgrading your worktop power, you’ve probably come across the term pop-up socket. But what exactly is one, and how does it work?
At BPF Ltd, we’re often asked about the differences between pop-up sockets, pull-up sockets, and traditional wall outlets. So here’s a simple guide to help you understand how they work, what features are available, and how to choose the right one for your space.
Take a look at the video below to see one in action:
A pop-up socket is a worktop power unit installed directly into your kitchen surface. When you press the top (usually a central button or disc), the unit rises from the worktop to reveal built-in power outlets.
Once raised, you can plug in appliances, chargers, or devices. When you’re finished, the unit retracts back down into the surface for a clean, uncluttered finish.
Unlike wall-mounted sockets, pop-up sockets are:
They’re a popular solution in modern kitchens where wall space is limited or minimal design is preferred.
It’s easy to confuse the two.
The key difference? Some pull-up sockets (such as our POD range) can be retracted while plugs remain inserted. Most pop-up sockets can’t, they must be unplugged before closing.
Understanding this difference helps you decide which style suits your needs best.
Before purchasing, it’s important to check both:
Worktop Hole Diameter:
Each range requires a specific cut-out size. Common sizes include 92mm, 101mm, and 124mm (depending on model and adaptor use).
Always confirm the required diameter before cutting your worktop.
Clearance Below the Worktop:
You’ll need sufficient space beneath the surface to accommodate:
This is especially important for kitchen islands with drawers or cupboards underneath.
Pop-up sockets are designed to combine convenience with modern design.
They’re fitted directly into the worktop, making them ideal for kitchens where wall sockets are limited or impractical.
Unlike adding wall sockets, installing a pop-up unit doesn’t require removing tiles or chasing cables through walls. The unit is fitted through a pre-cut hole in the worktop and connected to an existing power supply below.
Many pop-up sockets combine several functions, including:
This all-in-one design helps reduce the need for extension leads and multi-plug adaptors.
Most concealed pop-up sockets sit slightly raised (typically around 5–7mm) when closed.
If you’re looking for a flush-fitting option, certain models – such as the Milan range – can sit flush with the worktop when installed with a compatible adaptor. Keep in mind that flush-fit adaptors may require a larger cut-out diameter.
If achieving a completely level finish is important for your kitchen design, this is something to check before ordering.
In short: no.
Most pop-up sockets must be unplugged before being retracted. If you need a unit that can be stowed while appliances remain plugged in, you may want to consider a pull-up socket instead.
This is one of the most common questions we receive – and an important factor when choosing between models.
Pop-up sockets are ideal for:
They’re especially useful where traditional wall sockets aren’t accessible or where a clean, minimalist finish is preferred.
When installed correctly and used as intended, pop-up sockets are perfectly safe for kitchen environments.
Look for models that offer:
We also recommend professional installation by a qualified electrician to ensure compliance with UK electrical regulations.
